Health Tip: Helping Digestion
Along
Ah, you've had a nice Thanksgiving meal. Maybe you ate
a little too much. But everything was so good!
Now you're ready for a nap. But after that nap, if you
want to get your digestive system going, is a good time to do some
Intestine Exercise. This simple exercise is the perfect way to
circulate the food and blood in your abdomen to aid digestion and
enhance overall abdominal and energetic health.
To do Intestine Exercise:
This exercise can be
performed standing up or lying down. When standing up, bend your
knees slightly and point your toes slightly inward so that the
outside edges of your feet are parallel. When lying down, lie on
your back with your legs shoulder-width apart and your shoulders
relaxed.
- Form
a triangle by touching your thumbs and forefingers together and
place them lightly on the lower abdomen.
- Pull
in the front wall of your lower abdomen as if you were trying to
touch your back. Tighten your rectal muscles at the same time.
- Then,
push your lower abdomen out, rounding it until you feel an
outward pressure.
- Breathe
comfortably and naturally, keeping your mouth slightly open as
you exhale.
- Repeat
the movement. Start with one set of 50 and work your way up to a
set of 300 as you advance.
Note: You should not overdo this exercise in the
beginning since it may result in some discomfort. If you feel
discomfort, do the exercise more gently. Rubbing and massaging the
abdomen can also help, especially if you feel pain. This and any
exercise should not replace medical advice, and you should report any
health concerns to your doctor.
Of course, you don't have to wait for a big Thanksgiving meal to do
Intestine Exercise. A little bit every day is the key for good
physical and energetic circulation. Luckily, you can do Intestine
Exercise almost anywhere: your car, the bus, your desk, even while
watching TV.

Editor's Pick: Healing
Chakras
Did you ever consider that the
issues you face in your life might all be due to the condition of
swirling wheels of energy in your body? Ilchi Lee thinks so. In his
book, Healing Chakras: Awaken Your Body's Energy System for
Complete Health, Happiness, and Peace, Lee
says, "complete health begins and ends with the chakras.
Problems with the chakras are rooted in problems of the body, mind,
and spirit. A change in the chakras signifies transformation of the
truest sort."
He goes on to explain how each of the seven chakras, essentially
the organs of the life energy system in our body according to Asian
medicine, are associated with different colors, physical organs,
emotions, and even personality characteristics. For example,
"the first chakra is the seat of the unconscious mind, housing
the instinctual drives for food, sex, and survival." When your
first chakra is out of balance, you may feel more nervous, insecure,
self-obsessed, and self-destructive. However, just by clearing,
strengthening, and balancing the energy in your first chakra, located
at your perineum in the genital area, you can gain courage and
self-esteem.
How do you do that? The simple mental and physical exercises in the
book, as well as in the accompanying guided meditation CD, provide
concrete ways of keeping your chakras healthy with daily practice.
With this kind of practice you can in theory reduce or eliminate the
need for medicines or therapy.
As Lee explains, that's possible because the chakras, and your energy
system in general, are connected to your nervous system, which
manages your mind, body, emotions, and even spirit. In fact, they are
the interface between your brain and your body. So by healing your
chakras, you can heal mind and body.
But even more than that, you
can awaken and get in touch with your own divinity. "When all
seven internal chakras are awakened, or activated, you will realize
Oneness with the rest of the cosmos, knowing that heaven and Earth
are within you."
In fact, that's Ilchi Lee's main focus in this book-how to achieve
spiritual completion through understanding and training your chakras.
He's extrapolated his chakra philosophy and training from the ancient
wisdom of his native Korean culture. About ten thousand years ago, a
spiritual tradition called Shin-sun-do taught this method. This
tradition is rooted in a sacred text known as the Chun Bu Kyung
or the Heavenly
Code, which speaks of the oneness between heaven, earth,
and human.
Ilchi Lee's book is unique in that it actually
translates and explains the Chun
Bu Kyung in terms of chakras. He says, "When the
effects of the Heavenly
Code are applied to the human chakra system, we can begin
to understand the underlying principles of Healing Chakras.
When all seven internal chakras are awakened, or activated, you will
realize Oneness with the rest of the cosmos, knowing that heaven and
Earth are within you."
Through the wisdom and guidance of this gorgeous book filled with
chakra artwork by Sedona artist Al Choi, anyone can keep their
chakras, and therefore their life, healthy, happy, and peaceful.
