Cold and Flu Remedies
The best defense and cure against any ailment is a strong
immune system, especially during the winter season. According to traditional
Asian medicine, the health of your body is determined by how you're your body's
natural energy flows through the many channels, called meridians, that run from
head to toe through your body.
Special exercises called meridian exercises can unblock and
strengthen any energy that is not flowing well. When you practice meridian
exercise consistently, your immune system is boosted, allowing you to thwart
the onset of colds and the flu. If for some reason you do come down with a cold
or flu, doing meridian exercises will make the symptoms milder, and you will recover
more quickly.
Meridian exercises focused on the head, neck, and chest are
especially effective for releasing any congestion or cold energy that can build
up there during the cold, winter months. Try these two exercises from Ilchi Lee's
book Meridian Exercise for Self-Healing regularly
to keep yourself clear and free of nagging colds or the flu.
Backward Head Tilt
-
Sit in a half-lotus position with your hands on
your knees. Tilt your head back as far as you can.

Open your mouth. Concentrate on the acupressure
point at the bottom of your neck right above your collar bone called CV 22.
- Keeping your head tilted back, relax your jaw so
it naturally drops down like a gentle yawn.
- Then slowly close your jaw so that your teeth
gently touch each other. Repeat steps 3 and 4 thirty-six times.

Next let your head drop to the right side,
stretching the left side of your neck. Rotate your head very slowly in a
circular motion, clockwise and then counterclockwise, to relax your neck
muscles.
Clasped Hands Forward Bend
This exercise expands the chest to enhance and strengthen
blood circulation in the lungs and endocrine system. It speeds up the process through
which your body releases toxins. If the lotus position is too difficult for you,
then perform this exercise in a half lotus posture or with your legs crossed.

Sit in a lotus position. With your arms down at
your sides, join your hands behind you and interlace your fingers, palms facing
down.

While keeping spine lengthened, but not rigid,
bend your upper body from the hips.

Simultaneously lift both arms behind your back,
palms facing upward.
- Return to step 1 and repeat three times.
