Cultivating Peace
Feature Article

Day of Peace DoveThe International Day of Peace, also known as World Peace Day, will take place on Tuesday, September 21, 2010. This year, humanity will experience the largest global observance of the event since its inception in 1981, by the United Nations General Assembly.  In short, "Peace Day" provides an opportunity for individuals, communities, organizations, and nations to create practical acts of peace on a shared date. It is dedicated to peace, or more specifically, the absence of war.

Since its inception, World Peace Day has marked our personal and planetary progress towards peace. It has grown to include millions of people around the world. Events range from personal individual ceremonies and private prayers to large public gatherings, concerts, and forums where hundreds of thousands of people participate.

Many organizations also use this day to promote their year-round peace-building efforts, whether their focus is on human rights, the environment, education, humanitarian relief, poverty, healthcare, disarmament, or international cooperation. This helps to create long-term impact beyond the annual observance.

Japanese Peace BellTo inaugurate the day, the "Peace Bell" is rung at the UN Headquarters. The bell was cast from coins donated by children from all continents. It is referred to as "a reminder of the human cost of war." The bell was an official gift from the Japanese people to the United Nations on June 8, 1954. The inscription in Japanese characters on its side reads: "Long live absolute world peace."

The UN's theme for the International Day of Peace this year is "Youth, Peace, and Development"; its slogan is: "Peace=Future". Nations and governments worldwide are participating on many levels--from proclamations to ceasefires to humanitarian aid. Click here for a list of UN activities.

One capstone of this year's observance is the UN Summit for The Millennium Development Goals. Another way that people all over the globe show support for "Peace Day" is through The Stand Up Campaign to End Poverty by 2015. Last year, over 170 million people participated!

Imagine PeaceThe Peace Day Global Broadcast will be featured on the www.internationaldayofpeace.org and www.cultureofpeace.org websites, from Sept. 17 to Sept. 21. This multimedia event will stream events from celebrations as they unfold around the planet. Live feeds will be interspersed with video segments of change makers around the globe, speeches from world leaders, videos on solutions to major problems facing humanity, and musical performances by Paul McCartney, Ringo Star, Stevie Wonder, Bono, Annie Lennox, Alanis Morissette and more. You can upload your own event video or embed the global broadcast into your own website!  Click here to see a preview of the global broadcast.

A Peace Day event can be as simple as lighting a candle, meditating on "Peace", or observing a minute of silence at 12:00 noon on September 21st.  You can release peace balloons, plant a rock for peace, invoke the universal "May Peace Prevail on Earth" prayer, dedicate a yoga session to peace, or gather friends to watch the "Peace One Day" documentary. On a grander scale you can organize a "Peace Walk" through your city or a "Peace Week" at work. Click here for more ideas! The impact of millions of people coming together in groups, large and small, on one day of peace is immense.

The International Day of Peace is also a Day of Ceasefire--personal or political. Take this opportunity to make peace in your own relationships as well as impact the larger conflicts of our time. Whatever you do:  Be seen. Be visible. Let the world know that you care about PEACE!
Finding Peace Through Agony
Ilchi Inspiration

Inner peace and peace in the world are intrinsically entwined. Many people who seek peace begin by looking for the peace that already exists inside them. However, they may not realize that to achieve great liberty and peace of mind, they also need to use everything in their life to move towards a big vision--a worthy goal that ignites a fire in their heart and satisfies their conscience.

With intense focus on this heartfelt goal, they can garner the will and energy to overcome their ego, attachments, and smaller desires, which enslave them and bury the light of peace inside. Though such a goal may also create great existential agony, trials, and worries, overcoming this kind of hardship acts as a deep meditation from which peace and liberty naturally follow.

Standing PoseOne way to practice this principle is by holding a yoga posture for longer periods of time, such as twenty minutes or more. As when you pursue a life goal, holding a posture produces internal challenge and discomfort. But if you face it, concentrate, and carry through until the end, your perseverance, as well as the changes in energy the posture itself produces, will bring you deep relaxation and peace.

So don't wish for a life without worries! Life without agonies and haunting questions is a dead life. Peace from playing it safe is not true peace. The meditation of overcoming agony "in the right way" and for the right reasons is a life practice. The "right way" does not involve sitting and worrying about a problem or obstacle you encounter as you pursue a goal, but rather focusing on the goal, facing your agony and worry, and moving through it. It is essentially using agony as a tool to move toward peace. When such great agony is overcome, the peace and liberty inside will gain strength and shine outward brightly.

That's why true peace cannot be realized simply through thought or prayer, though they help and are often a first step. Peace is not just a feeling, but is realized through living life. It's the essence of life. Therefore, peace that remains in our thoughts, but is not expressed in our world is not real; it's merely a figment of our imagination, a dream. Only when we work to make that dream a reality through our sweat and tears, only when we endeavor to create peace beyond ourselves, can we truly say that we have found peace.
Opening Your "Peace" Chakra
Health Matters

Fifth Chakra SymbolCommunication is perhaps the single most important factor in cultivating peace in our lives. Knowing how to speak with an open heart and listen with an open mind leads to better interpersonal relations and a greater understanding of life. Knowing when to speak and when to be silent can help us immensely as we navigate the complexities of personal interactions, and this mindfulness also translates into a deeper awareness of our own inner voice.

It is no surprise then that the Fifth Chakra, the throat chakra, is associated with peace, harmony, healing, and balance. It is often depicted by a sixteen-leaf lotus flower and a blue-green color similar to the crystal clear waters of a tropical sea. Blue-green is also the color associated with healing and the restoration of harmony and balance. It represents inspiration, devotion, peace, and silence. When you visualize this color, you immediately sense a calm healing sensation throughout your body.

The Fifth Chakra is the also center for purification and cleansing. It helps rid the body of toxins and addictions, and opens the mind and heart. When you have an open mind, you are better able to navigate the up and down challenges of life. When your Fifth chakra is open you experience a natural ability to "go with the flow" of life. When closed, you experience a lack of emotional control, fatigue, and a hyper-sensitivity to change.

Fifth Chakra ExerciseThe throat chakra is a bridge between the head and the heart, or the human physical and spiritual realms. In Korean traditions, the Fifth Chakra is referred to as the "Soul's Gate". Without going through this gate, you cannot completely move into the realm of the spiritually divine and experience true peace.

To open your Fifth Chakra, do this exercise on a regular basis:
  1. Kneel with your hips resting on your heels. Place both hands on your back, near your kidneys.
  2. Breathe in and bend your upper body backward as much as possible.
  3. Breathe out and bend your back and head forward. Pull your chin down so that it touches your chest.
You can also try this exercise by letting out a vocal tone, whatever is natural to you, on the out breath as you bend forward. We all have our own tone and frequency. Relax into it and find your true voice!
